Making a meaningful connection with parents and carers is a central pillar of Visible Thinking’s approach to providing successful residencies in schools. Working alongside parents allows them time and space to see their children from a different perspective and to share in their discoveries and development.
At Pillowell School, Visible Thinking set up a pilot programme where children invited their parents to play music and tell stories with them during the school day. Eighteen parents participated in sessions. An interview with one of them (see below) reveals the impact that music and literacy sessions made on his two children.
We will build on this aspect of our work in the ‘A Place to Play Music’ project. Part of the funding will be used to set up and run a 6 month programme of weekly parent and child sessions linked to the curriculum, aimed at developing a sustainable approach to community led music teaching in schools.
