Children as Documentors

Documentation is an essential element in all of our work. We document and analyze children’s learning extensively through observation, photography and video. We also encourage children to become documenters of their own learning. The impact on children’s confidence and attainment as a result of engaging with learning in this way can be enormous. In a pilot programme with Hannah Moore Primary School, a group of Year 4 children documented younger children’s learning at a local nursery. This group attended weekly sessions watching storytelling and tracking the nursery children’s play. Visible Thinking subsequently received a commission from RIO/Creative Partnerships to work in residency in the Forest of Dean, exploring the impact of documentation and creative writing with a targetted group of Key Stage 2 children.

‘I wish I came here every week. Not every day do you get the chance to see what children think’. (Year 4 child, Hannah Moore Primary)
